What struck me most today? The 5 stage model of learning. I neglect or superficially cover Stages 1 & 2 and maybe that's why some students simply refuse to participate more actively. The motivation and socialisation stages are lacking at the beginning and students do not 'feel at home' or comfortable enough to share more freely because they are still wary of their classmates.
Relax. Have more 'social interactions' to build rapport. The syllabus may be pressing, but the social foundation laid will definitely pay off in the long run.

For building cnfidence in classrooms, I am aware that many people do not speak up for fear of appearing stupid. So I pick them at random, and make sure that whatever they say, I agree (reply is 'yes... and' rather than 'no... but' so that everyone is encouraged. Sometimes it's hard to find the good, of course!
