one learning point

Didn't publish so I seem to have lost the posting. What I typed out was that I am now sensitized to the need for Socialisation. I've tried using Discussion Board, Group Pages, Wikis and Blogs for lessons but I was immediately task-oriented.
am reminded once again that knowing and understanding how learners learn is so key to engaging students in their learning process. once that is in place, everything else, including me facilitates their learning experience.

so whatever i do in class (f2f) or online then takes in consideration of how to ease students into the environment, get them comfortable w/ the people who becomes their community, build confidence in what they do, discover the joy of learning and collaborating w/ their peers and inevitably, learning takes place and learning can be a fun thing. :)

challenge for the teacher

In view of the examination system in place in the institution, how much space can teachers give to students to explore ideas? Syllabi have to be followed and completed, and at the end of the day, students themselves may want just enough content to deal with exams and get good grades.

learning point

the 5-stage model has really set me re-thinking abt the pedagogies to adopt in designing e-learning instruction & the entire process. i'm quite slow in getting full comprehension of the entire model but i'm quite sure it'd be one tt i need to read again, digest it and apply it!

actually, i can't wait to get started or i'd just forget stuff!
This is bigger than I thought. It is a whole new approach to teaching, summed up in the phrase 'a guide by the side' rather than a 'sage on the stage'. Also, a lot of what I have heard to day could be applied in the classroom, in terms of how to engage students, get them working with each other, and assessing what they have achieved. I want to know more about how groups of students interact online, and some of the social norms that guide their behaviour - whether it is different online to classroom. Or do the ones who are subdued in class speak up online, or is it always the same ones who step up with opinions?

The first step in Choosing the right blend for our learners

My goal for today was finding the right technologies for me to bring back to Indonesia.
Actually, by this time the right technologies I've found is already there...

I've learnt the power of web 2.0 that simple to use and easy to pass on!
The first step in Choosing the right blend for our learners is we have to learn more and use these things ourselves more often and get familiar with. We've to know the power according to use it right.

BTW its fun!

My reflection on blended learning

Hope for today was to see how blended learning could address diverse individual learning needs of the students.

Learning for today: Some things that one needs to bear in mind in order to achieve individualised learning

(1) know our students - their learning styles, what they know & do not know (in relation to the topic),
(2) setup the environment - process, rubric, support structures (eg help files, just-in-time content)
(3) get students to be comfortable with (a) online tools for learning and collaboration, (b) each other - both in face-in-face and online settings.
(4) motivate them by making the learning process fun, engaging, encouraging.

Gone are the days where one learns just from books and our good-ol sages-on-stages.

Online Socialization

It never occur to me that socialization is so critical to the e-learning environment. This is certainly an activity that is even more difficult to achieve without face to face interaction.

Given that this may be crucial to achieving a successful learning environment, it is certainly important that more attention be given to this aspect during the course planning phase.

Rubric for a group wiki

This is really timely - I've set up a group wiki project where a group of 4 people (7 groups altogether) have to work online using wiki to write ONE essay. Originally, I thought of giving all the members One group mark - I'm re-thinking that, so that one component of the assessment would include the individual's contribution.

Blended Learning reflection

What struck me most today? The 5 stage model of learning. I neglect or superficially cover Stages 1 & 2 and maybe that's why some students simply refuse to participate more actively. The motivation and socialisation stages are lacking at the beginning and students do not 'feel at home' or comfortable enough to share more freely because they are still wary of their classmates.

Relax. Have more 'social interactions' to build rapport. The syllabus may be pressing, but the social foundation laid will definitely pay off in the long run.

stable foundational content

My learning goal today was to evaluate how I might build capacity for blended learning among my staff. A key take away and concept I will think about is the notion of "stable foundational content." I think it might be a good starting point for many of my staff.

I think many staff like the idea of blended learning but struggle with how to make it a practical reality in their lives. They don't know where to begin and when they even think about starting, it seems overwhelming - there's so much to learn. One way I can help them is by chunking and focusing the learning on something that's very manageable - both to learn and to put into practice. To get them onboard with the initial investment of time and to motivate them to persevere to completion, I really need to have a deliverable that they're convinced will save them time relatively quickly.

That's where stable foundational content comes in.

I think my staff can easily identify the stable foundational content in their areas. They can pick a course or topic within a course that they're very excited about - that will enhance their motivation. If I can provide some scaffolding and practical support to help them put together an e package for their foundational content, I think quite a few staff might be interested in putting this together.

As I think about this, I'm considering that what I might do first is a brief survey of what kinds of things would be most useful to them to include in an epackage - lectures, group discussions, assignments, problems, etc. From there, perhaps I can arrange an all day, hands on workshop to help them build it. Or at least get them well on their way.
